Make a wish for a better world
Where: Brown University / Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, Rhode Island, A Better World By Design 2009 Poster for BetterxDesign Seed Fund Dates: 2nd October 2009 - 4th October 2009
My vision of the world, better by design, 24 x 36 inches.
When I was a child I used to wish on dandelions, picking these tantalizing puffballs and blowing the parachutes off the stalk, wondering how far the seeds would go. The dandelion is one of nature's best designed plants, completely edible, it overcomes adverse conditions, with its seeds traveling for miles and adapting to most regions of the world. The dandelion represents to me ambitions and dreams for a better world, a symbol for hope. Like seeds being blown into the wind, A Better World By Design conference represents the propagation of ideas, spreading opportunities for collaboration, engagement, development, and a more united community. In this poster, I am using the metaphor of the dandelion to spread ideas that relate to renewable energies, sustainable technologies and practices –topics of discussion at the conference.
Using Web 2.0 tools to engage students in social activism through design communication
Where: 2008 Mid-America College Art Association (MACAA) Biennial Conference Herron School of Art & Design, Indianapolis, Indiana, October 15-18, 2008 When: 17th October 2008, 8am - 9am
In this presentation, the audience will experience how University of Hartford design students utilize Web 2.0 applications, like Facebook, wikis and blogs, to create and disseminate a visual communication awareness campaign to address an environmental cause. Through their experience, students will motivate others from their social networks to become involve with the campaign and disseminate their work online, therefore involving an audience outside of the classroom boundaries.
Using audiovisual materials, the audience will be taken on a tour of different online collaborative tools utilized during the “Issues in Design” course. The session will demonstrate how these technologies enhance students’ learning and facilitate the design thinking and processes involved in the visual communication campaign.
Using Web 2.0 Tools in Design Communication to Engage Students in Social Activism
Where: 2008 Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching (MERLOT) Eighth International Conference Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System, Minneapolis, Minnesota, August 7-10, 2008. When: 9th August 2008
In the “Issues in Design” course at the University of Hartford, students are encouraged to think globally, connect, create and share —using web technology to help them transcend boundaries— and create a better society through design communication. In this presentation, I will show how web 2.0 collaborative tools (Facebook, blogs, wikis) have been used to inspire students into creating their own voice and engage them in social change and activism, by disseminating their work on the internet.
